On the severity of the punishment of the damned, against those who say that the damned are tormented by a light suffering.
Therefore, we must listen with awe to the words of the Sacred Scriptures which, for our atonement, show us how severe and harsh will be the punishment of the damned spoken of in the thema, for they will be tormented for eternity with very severe punishments. On the severity of the punishment of the damned, we will thus assign a threefold reason:
The first relates to the place, for the punishment of the damned will be most severe because of the horrible conditions of hell; and on the reality and characteristics of hell.
The second relates to the horror, since most grievous will be the punishment of the damned because of the complaints and blasphemies that characterise hell and because of the consortium of demons.
The third relates to eternity, since God rationally chastises the damned with a punishment of eternal and infinite duration, even though the sinful act itself is finite and limited in time.
