Translation: |
On the severity of the punishments of the damned, aiming to terrorise the incorrigible and obstinate.
And, although we have previously explained many things that should be sufficient to tame reluctant minds, there are still some things to be considered about the severity of the punishments of the damned that, if carefully considered, will soften the stubborn minds of obstinate sinners. We shall therefore say that the punishment of the damned is severe and harsh for a threefold reason:
The first is that of combustion: as the damned suffer bitter punishment because of hellfire and its terrible characteristics.
The second is excess: how the punishment of the damned surpasses all other punishments of purgatory and those of the present life.
The third is deprivation, how the punishment of the damned will be onerous because of the lack of divine vision; and on the difference between corporal punishment and the punishment of loss (of the vision of God).
