Translation: |
On fasting to which, especially on this day, the Church summons and invites the faithful.
And, since the wise teacher of all, in the words quoted in the thema, invites us to prepare for the life to come, thus in this sermon we shall rightly lead Christ's faithful to the special reverence for fasting. We shall therefore see three main mysteries about fasting:
The first concerns condition: about the foods from which one must abstain during fasting, and about the time and hour of the meal on fasting days; and why there is no specified quantity of food as there is for the time of eating.
The second concernes obligation, since men are bound to fast either by the precepta of the Church, or by imposed penance, or by the instructions of the bishops.
The third concerns utility, since fruitful fasting is useful for temporal, corporal and spiritual goods.
