On the formidable portents of the (Last) Judgment.
However, His coming will be preceded by terrible omens, which in this sermon we will rightly have to deal with after the example of those whom Christ so harshly cast out of His sight and eternally condemned. Of these omens, three main mysteries are to be enunciated:
The first concerns the condition, for when the time of judgment shall be imminent, many omens will occur in the sun, in the moon, in the stars in heaven and on earth, in the angels, and almost in every other creature.
The second relates to reason, for the omens spoken of in the previous chapter will stand for the harshness of the judge and the accusation of sins, and, in a certain way, for the pity of the miserable damned.
The third concerns the conclusion, because terrible will be the trumpet blast that will summon the dead to judgment; and because divine virtue will be the efficient cause of the renewal of the body and the resurrection of the dead, while the trumpet blast will be the instrumental cause.
