Translation: |
On the necessity of the holy confession, against those who claim that confessing one's sins to the priest is superfluous and useless.
Therefore, in the present sermon we shall deal with the necessity of confession, which is mandatory for all penitents for a threefold reason:
The first reason concerns the testimony of the Doctors (of the Church) and the Holy Scriptures, since through the words of the holy Doctors one can prove the way in which confession of sins is necessary for the salvation of penitents.
The second reason concerns Christ's institution (of confession), since confession is necessary for salvation, as it was established by our Lord Jesus Christ at the time of the lex gratiae; and how it (i.e. the confession) belongs to natural law and how it was represented in the written law.
The third concerns the precepta of the Church, since one must confess not only because of the first institution (of Christ), but also because of the precepta of the Church, to which no one is exempt, except those who are without sin.
