On fleeing from sin, for it is to be fled more than any evil in this world.
Therefore in this sermon we must speak about fleeing from sin, about which the wise man from Ecclesiasticus XXI said: 'Flee from sin as from a serpent" (Sirach or Ecclesiasticus 21:2). We shall therefore assign a threefold reason why we must flee from sin:
The first reason concerns complaisance, since sin is to be fled from as it pleases the Devil; and how he is the indirect cause of sins, and how gladness and delight may be found in demons.
The second concerns harmfulness, since sin is to be fled from because it deprives men of divine grace, it is always followed by torment and punishment, and it annihilates the soul itself.
The third concerns displeasure: how sin must be fled from as it displeases God, since the sinner transgresses His precepta, despises the infinite good and provokes His wrath.
