Translation: |
On purgatory and the atrocious punishments that torment the souls of those who do not expiate their sins in the present life.
And, since many refuse to repent for their sins and devote themselves to penance in this life, believing the punishments inflicted in purgatory to be soft and mild, if not nonexistent, therefore in this sermon we shall speak of purgatory, about which we shall clarify three mysteries:
The first concerns truth: about the truth and place of purgatory and about those who, after this life, before ascending to heaven, need to be purified.
The second concerns punishment: about the will (to bear the punishment) of those who suffer in purgatory and on the severity of the punishments and the minister through whom God inflicts those torments.
The third concerns gladness: about the joy experienced by those in purgatory, either because of the certainty of their salvation, or the confirmation of grace, or the assistance of the living.
