Magnum igitur est habere potentiam receptivam gratie; maius habere aliquem gustum gratie; maximum habere plenitudinem gratie; permaximum habere continuationem et perseverantiam gratie. Istarum quattuor differentias dominus ostendit in verbis premissis: 1) Primo enim ostendit quod quilibet homo habet potentiam gratie receptivam, quia in potestate cuiuslibet est venire ad fontem gratie (ideo dicit: “Si quis sitit, veniat ad me”); 2) Secundo promittit dare gustum gratie cum subdit “et bibat”; 3) Tertio promittit dare plenitudinem gratie cum dicit “flumina de ventre eius (i.e. de corde eius) fluent”; 4) Quarto promittit dare continuationem et perseverantiam gratie cum subdit “fluent aque vive”.

A great thing is to have the capacity to receive grace; a greater thing is to have some taste of grace; an even greater thing is to have the fullness of grace; the greatest is to have continuation and persistence of grace. The Lord shows the differences between these four things in the words above: 1) Firstly, he shows that every human being possesses the capacity to receive grace, since it's within everyone's possibility to reach the source of grace (therefore he says “Si quis sitit, veniat ad me”); 2) Secondly, he promises to give the taste of grace when he adds “et bibat”; 3) Thirdly, he promises to give the fullness of grace when he says “flumina de ventre eius (i.e. de corde eius) fluent”; 4) Fourthly, he promises to give continuation and persistence of grace when he adds “fluent aque vive”.
