Dominum Deum tuum adorabis et illi soli servies. (Matthew 4:10) |

| Original: |
• primo, idolatrie originationem;
• secundo, idolatrie offensionem;
• tertio, idolatrie dilatationem.

| Translation: |
In this sentence the second form of religiosity is shown, namely the restraining one, since Christ teaches that God alone is to be worshipped and that one must serve him alone with all one’s effort. Let us therefore consider three aspects concerning idolatry, so that all our affections, words, and actions may be restrained from every form of idolatrous worship:
• first, the origin of idolatry;
• second, the offense of idolatry;
• third, the spread of idolatry.

Second in a weekly series of sermons devoted to eight forms of “religiosity” (cf. 24/1/9). Contrary to what is announced, the second form of religiosity is not “reforming” (reformans), but “restraining” (refrenans).
