In precedentibus tribus sermonibus satis sufficienter visum est quis satisfacere obligatus sit. Iam ad secundum et tertium principale, scilicet quid et quantum, pertractandum dirigamus sermonem. […] Ad quarum intelligentiam insinuanda est etiam regula in principio XXXIII sermonis annunciata, que talis est: omne damnum quod quis dat aut est causa efficax quod detur satisfacere obligatur. Ex qua regula elici potest quod triplex est damnum quod proximo inferri solet: primum est damnum spirituale; secundum damnum corporale; tertium vero damnum temporale.

In the preceding three sermons we have sufficiently examined who is bound to make restitution. We now turn to the second and third main points, namely what must be restored and how much. […] To understand these matters, we must also recall the rule set forth at the beginning of sermon 33: everyone is bound to repair any harm he causes or for which he is the effective cause. From this rule we can infer that three kinds of harm are commonly inflicted upon one’s neighbor: first, spiritual harm; second, bodily harm; third, temporal (social) harm.
