In this Gospel, as in an orchard of delights, we collect a fruit according to the matter discussed above, where we said that Charon symbolizes time dragging the souls and the river Cocytus the duty to cross it. Therefore, the Gospel according to this meaning depict the bitter fights that the human being has in death [...]. First, it depicts the bitter fight that the man has dying. And Christ says three things. First: I go; second: you will look for me; third: I am from above. With these words he wants to show three things concerning anyone’s death. First, because strong and harsh witness will surge, since I go. Second, there will be few helps, since you will die in your sin; third, the scarsity of our merits, since you are from below.
